Spectrum VoicesThis project was created to represent communities that often remain misunderstood by the majority.
It is important to note that we are talking about the spectrum, since people’s experiences may differ tremendously even if they use the same labels. That’s why I decided to pick aromanticity and asexuality as general terms for the project.
The title “Spectrum Voices” is a wordplay which emphasizes both the variety of the experiences and their right to be heard.
Aromanticity, as a spectrum, is about weak romantic attraction or its absence.
Asexuality, as you might guess, refers to sexual attraction—more precisely, its absence or a low need for sex.
When you dive into the topic, the whole world of other labels opens up. For instance, demisexuality is an orientation in which sexual attraction appears only after forming a strong emotional bond.
Important to keep in mind: not every aromantic person is asexual and vice versa. People with different experiences and identities participated in the project.
The main purpose was to give a voice to the participants; to give them space for sharing their lives, difficulties, desires.
This project is a dialogue—between the voices that aren’t always heard and the eyes that are rarely met with understanding.
The stories shared by the participants became its heart. The portraits aren’t simply illustrations—they are the echo of those voices, the visual witnesses of presence.
